You will never get bored for lack of entertainment in San Miguel de Allende. I don’t think we have ever been in a place with so many festivals and celebrations. There are over 75 religious and civic holidays throughout the year. The numerous celebrations for Christmas start around December 20th and carry on through the New Years and into February. Check the calendar of events for whatever time of year you are visiting, you never know what might be going on.
Dates of Festivals and Celebrations In San Miguel de Allende
For three months we stayed in a casita that was within a short walking distance of the main jardin. This is the area where much of the activity takes place. Due to the close proximity we could often hear noise coming from the square. It would peak our curiosity. We would come down the hill to find anything from a marching band, military parade, dancing, fireworks or live musicians.
Fireworks tend to go off on any given night, and at all hours of the night. We had a few shocks when they were going off right outside our bedroom window. They are used to celebrate everything. It is customary to set them off when there is a birth, a death or a wedding. When someone passes away the fireworks are let off to let the angels know the departed person is on their way.

Have wanted to visit that city for years – especially for a longer period of time. I understand that there are a huge number of course offerings on a wide range of topics – study for pleasure and enjoy the odd colourful looking festival.

It’s a fascinating place. We enjoyed spending 3 months there. I don’t think we would have ever come across it if we had not bumped into people during our world trip. They offered us a deal to rent their casita that we couldn’t refuse. Lots of people go to SMA to study Spanish. Your right, there are a wide variety of courses on offer, particularly in the arts.
